Crossroads in Cain
Karim: The Northern Kingdom – Dwarves & Gnomes
The Dwarves of Karim live well in the Northern Kingdom. Their war with the Ull’Thar clan solidified their power in the North. But while their power remains strong, the Dwarves of Karim are now reviled by many because winning their war had the unintended side-effect of annihilating their brothers to the south, putting the Duergar in sole control of the Ull’Thar mountains and its wondrous forge. The Karim Dwarves are by no means evil. Yet, thanks to the Duergar-led conspiracy, their name is now spoiled with the label of dishonor.
The Karim are masters of construct magics and defend their small kingdom with the constructs they and their gnome tinkerers build. Their constructs are both large and powerful, and small and delicate. The Karim are made up of three major “houses”, which vote on important matters, such as going to war and forging alliances.
The Great House Aurum, is ruled by Thane Ygnal and is the oldest house and first among equals on the Council of Brass. It is this house that led the charge to war against the Ull’Thar. Because of this stigma, they prefer to remain neutral, and have voted against the alliance with Lora, a neighboring city of Men.
The Great House Cuprum is ruled by Thane Gilmarad. Sided with House Argentum in the vote on an alliance with Lora. The Great House Argentum ruled by Thane Helmoral, the youngest of the three great houses on the council, brokered the alliance with Lora.
This peace has brought her house great wealth and power, which threatens Thane Ygnal and house Aurum.
The gnomes of Karim are mostly tinkerers and care not for the politics of Cain. They are content building their constructs. A rumor exists that the gnomes are the true inventors and champions of the Karim constructs, and that the dwarves use them for their knack of building, tinkering and inventing. Gnomes are barely seen outside of Karim.
